Orthograde Retreatment

With proper management, majority of teeth that have had endodontic treatment will last as long as other natural teeth. However, in some cases a tooth that have received root canal treatment may fail to heal. If so, endodontic retreatment may be needed.

Some reasons for improper healing could be due to :

• Some of the root canals were undetected at initial treatment
• Located root canals were not disinfected adequately
• Inadequate restorations were placed after the root canal treatment leading to re-infection

Once retreatment has been decided as the solution your tooth will need to be re-accessed to gain entry to the existing root canal filling material. The root canals will need to be cleaned and carefully assessed. Once cleaned, the root canals can be filled back and sealed with a temporary filling material. After the retreatment procedure, you will need to return back to your general dentist to have a new restoration or crown placed.
